BARBARA MARY SHALKHAUSER (née Grunn), age 84, of Berea passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Southwest General Health Center. Barbara was born December 14, 1931, to Goodwin and Florence (née Schartman) Grunn in their home in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from the Lourdes Academy in 1950, and was a cadet in the United States Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol during WWII. After graduation, Barbara moved with her mother to Berea, Ohio, where she has since resided. Barbara was employed at the Ramsey-Bennett Co. in Cleveland during the early 1950s. After raising her family, she worked for the Berea Police Department as a school crossing guard and was known for her waves to everyone. Barbara was then employed as a ward secretary at Southwest General Hospital, retiring from the Oakview Center in the early 1990s. Barbara enjoyed cooking, gardening, collecting, crafting, birdwatching, solving puzzles, and discussing local area history. She loved corresponding with friends and family through cards and letters. Most of all she enjoyed seeing and feeding her grandchildren. Barbara was the loving mother of Eric of Olmsted Falls, Kurt (Mary Jo) of Amherst, Judd (Leyla) of Alto, New Mexico, and Paul of Berea; dear grandmother of Amanda, Jacob and Lucas; beloved aunt; and selfless friend to many. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, and by her precious sister Donna Calala. Memorial Services to be announced at a later date.
