IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barbara L.
Weyhe
May 5, 1934 – November 30, 2019
BARBARA L. WEYHE (nee Nevens) entered this world 8 weeks prematurely on May 5, 1934. She passed away peacefully at St. Mary of the Woods in Avon, Ohio, on November 30, 2019, surrounded by her family. She was 85.
Barbara was the second of two daughters born to the late Efrozina and Walter Nevens, in Binghamton, New York. She and her big sister Beverly were as thick as thieves. The two tomboys loved to climb trees and sneak out of their bedroom window to sit on the roof, upsetting their mother Effie, who thought Barbara as a "preemie" was too small and frail to engage in such shenanigans.
In 1942, the family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where Barbara graduated from Redford High School in 1952. She then attended the University of Detroit to study elementary education. While there, she turned the heads of several young admirers but would only agree to double dates. On one such outing, and much to the chagrin of her actual date that evening, she met the man she would spend the rest of her life with, her beloved husband Dennis Weyhe. They married in the chapel at the former Duns Scotus College and Friary in Southfield, Michigan on August 20, 1955, and moved to Missouri where Dennis was enrolled in the dental school at St. Louis University. After dental school, the young couple lived in Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Ord, California; and Pirmasens, Germany, while Dennis served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps before settling near Cleveland in Elyria, Ohio where they opened a dental practice.
Barbara's love of family was apparent in all she did raising her five children and helping with her husband's growing dental practice. She especially enjoyed taking her children for walks in the woods behind her home, and caring for her many (mostly stray and abandoned) animals that she adopted over the years. She was actively involved in the Lorain County Women's Dental Auxiliary, an organization that provided oral health educational programming at community health fairs and in the local schools.
She was dearly loved and cherished by those she left behind: her husband of 64 years Dennis Weyhe; her children Dennis Weyhe, Jr. (Nancy), Nancy Wellener (Paul), Kathleen Diederich (Greg), Mark Weyhe, and Patricia Williamson (Marc); and her 12 grandchildren: David, Scott, and Erica Weyhe; Shannon Testa; Lesley, Haley, and Carly Wellener; Brian (Shelagh), Kate, and Amy Diederich; and William and Daphne Williamson.
