Bridget “Bridgie” Ned Campbell Conway was born on January 7, 1939, in Doona East, Ballycroy, Westport, County Mayo, Ireland. She was the devoted daughter of the late Nora (Ginty) and Edward (Ned) Campbell. Bridgie ‘left her native parish when she was just a girl; it was the place she loved best on Earth, her lovely Ballycroy,’ and emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, where she built a life rooted in family and community. She carried her homeland in her heart, always honoring her heritage through her courageous spirit, true companionship, laughter, and generosity. Bridgie’s home and heart were always open. She was known for her warm welcome, home-cooked meals, love of Irish music, humor, and compassion for others. Her faith never wavered, and her laughter could fill any room. Laughter to her was better than any medicine. To know Bridgie was to feel at home, uplifted, and loved. She never stopped giving, or helping others, and finding ways to make something out of nothing. Bridgie would be described by many as one of a kind. She was steadfast and strong in her devotion to family, along with her contributions to the West Side Irish community. She was a founding member and long-term board member of The Mayo Society of Greater Cleveland, Hibernian of the year, 1979, and was named “Irish Mother of the Year” in 2023. Bridgie sure was a beloved figure on Cleveland’s West Side, for she never met a stranger. She was known to act at a moment’s notice, reaching into her handbag to give a beautiful medal, holy water from Ireland, a loaf of bread, or simply share the latest news.
On the day after Christmas, December 26th, St. Stephen’s Day, one of her memorable Irish holidays, Bridgie passed away surrounded by family.
She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Manus, of 58 years (Ballycroy); her cherished daughter, Nora Margaret; her parents, Nora and Edward Campbell; and her dear brothers, Pat and Tom Campbell.
She is survived by her children: Ruth Anne, Rosemary, Frank (Karin), Colleen, and Keith; her adored grandchildren: Cailin, Aidan, Jamie, James, Bridget, and Norah; her siblings: (Mary), Mike, John (Joan), Maggie (Tommy), Martin (Breege); Sister-in-law, Dympna, and her dearest lifelong friends: Theresa Moran Ihasz and Margaret Lally; and Godchildren: Fiona Chambers, Helen Jones, and Sheila Kropf. She leaves behind nieces and nephews and loved ones in Ireland and England. All of whom loved her and will miss her dearly.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Patrick Campbell of PJ McIntyres, Danny and Marissa Conway, O’Neil Healthcare Fairview Park, Cleveland Clinic Moll Cancer Center, Dr. Brian Haines, and all who helped and supported her during the last years of her journey. The family can not ever begin to express enough gratitude for the abundance of support received these last few years and throughout Mom’s life.
