CATHERINE J. KELLEY (nee Blumena) age 99,  passed away peacefully on November 19, 2019, in Westlake, Ohio, after a brief illness. She was the second of six children born to Bernard J. and Anna V. (nee McNeeley) Blumena in Cleveland and graduated from St. Stephen's High School. Catherine started her first job at the age of 13, working at Woolworth's. During World War II she taught servicemen how to roller skate at the old rollercade on Dennison Ave. As a young woman, she worked at the May Company on Public Square as a window model and elevator operator. Her co-workers, in a nod to her Irish heritage, nicknamed her "Mick," which became her family's lifetime term of affection for her. In 1957 she married her beloved husband, Edward G. Kelley. She and Edward enjoyed traveling to Frankenmuth and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; Kelley's Island, Ohio; and New England, especially Maine. The couple lived most of their married life in Lakewood, and Catherine took great pride in maintaining her home there, living independently until 2014, even after Edward's death in 1989. A devout Catholic, she kept a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin. She was a long-time parishioner of St. James and for years volunteered as a reading tutor to young students at St. James School. Catherine was devoted to her family, her brothers and sisters. Although she had no children of her own, she especially loved caring for all the babies in the family. She was a notoriously lenient babysitter and was generous with outfits and gifts at weddings and baby showers, birthdays and holidays, making sure each little one received a special Christmas stocking. Her quick sense of humor and gift for storytelling made her a favorite at family gatherings. She could be feisty and independent. At her core, she had a gentle, loving nature. In addition to her parents and husband Edward, Catherine is predeceased by her sisters, Rose (Blumena) Golden and Phyllis (Blumena) Rhodes and her brothers Thomas Blumena and Charles Blumena. She is survived by her sister Betty Jane Marshall of Mentor; her brother James Blumena and his wife, Therease Clark Blumena, of Fairview Park; and her best friend, Carol Blumena, of Westlake. Surviving are 14 nieces and nephews, many grand nieces and nephews, and several great grand nieces and nephews. Catherine's family would like to thank the staff of Rae-Ann Westlake and Hospice of the Western Reserve for their compassionate care. Funeral Mass Monday, November 25, St. James Church (Detroit Ave. & Granger Ave. Lakewood) at 10 A.M. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
