Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Prior to his passing, Dave wrote his own obituary and requested that it be published as written.   The Bassi family is honoring his wishes.

David Anthony Bassi, formerly of W. 36 th and Stough Ave in Erie died quite expectedly in Cleveland on September 13, 2021.  Although graduating from Cathedral Prep HS, John Carroll University, and Troy State University, he is most proud of the 12 years he spent graduating from Grade 8 at Our Lady of Peace Elementary.

After several years of tending and attending bars throughout Erie, Dave unsuccessfully attempted to dry out by entering the US Air Force.  Remarkably, after serving tours in Guam and Arizona, he was honorably discharged after 8 years of service with the cleanest rifle in the military as he stealthily avoided any and all combat during his enlistment.

Dave proceeded to work for several government agencies and eventually retired from the Federal Aviation Administration just before they removed him for lack of productivity.  He spent 4 years working for the Department of Defense in Suffolk, England before being politely asked by Parliament to surrender his passport due to an almost criminal beer consumption rate.

A journeyman baseball player for John Carroll University and several Glenwood League teams, he is best remembered for his mammoth 220-foot home run to left at Bayview that was aided by a tree branch and a rogue, furry woodland animal.

He was truly a substandard husband to ex-wife Janet Bassi of Cleveland which resulted in him becoming an even greater disappointment to his second and current wife, Traci Bassi of North Olmsted, OH.  Along the way, however, he managed to actually do something right as he raised 2 beautiful and talented daughters Sarah and Meghan Coteff (Jordan) and one incredible son (Dominic), all of Cleveland.  Step-father of Drake (Rebekah) and Dean.  Grandfather of Drake and Sofiah.  He will be missed by his beloved dogs Bambi, Vanna and Vincent.  He was the accidental spawn of parents, Assunta Carlucci Bassi and Nickoli Bassi, both of Erie, who prayed for their death to escape him.  He is survived by a brother, Nick Bassi of Flower Mound, TX, who was the smart one in the family as evidenced by the fact that he successfully avoided his brother for over 40 years.

He was a member of American Legion Post in Brookpark, OH who assured Dave before he died, they would send a team of Riflemen to his funeral…not to salute his service, but to make sure he was good and dead once and for all.  He will be sorely missed by quite possibly no one and news of his death will assuredly come as welcome relief for all who encountered him.  Go Browns!

Dave gave the gift of life at Lifebanc through the donation of his kidneys.
