DONALD "DON" DIVER, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, closing a final chapter of what can only be described as an inspirational journey through life. The youngest of 13, Don was born on December 10, 1939, in Knife Falls, Carlton County, Minnesota to Michael and Elizabeth (née Wood) Diver. From birth, life took him in many directions – both geographically and figuratively. He was taken away from home to attend Wahpeton and Flandreau Indian Schools in North and South Dakota and then served in tours overseas with the United States Marine Corps, but he ultimately settled in Cleveland, Ohio – climbing the corporate ladder and retiring as an executive at the Cleveland Clinic in 2002.
Deeply introspective, Don was always transparent about the tensions he felt about his place in the world. Once describing the workings of his identity as akin to “fixing the intricate parts of a television set,” he astutely articulated the many worlds he was caught between as a Native American man navigating life away from his family in a place he did not grow up. Most recently, his story and reflections were captured and immortalized in the 2024 novel The Indian Card.
A loving father, grandfather, and “Uncle Dee,” his story and life continues to be celebrated by those he is survived by: his daughter Mary Cominsky (Mark), his grandchildren Noah, Grace (Katelyn), and Luke, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including: Karen (Arne) and Kevin (Carrie). With his passing, he reunites with the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Maureen (née Barrett) and his immediate family, most especially his elder brother Chuck. Don cherished family above all – and expressed his love through sharing. Sharing stories, sharing his style (he had quite the eye for ties), or even sharing an occasional glass of scotch. Those he leaves behind will do their very best to honor his sharp wit, resilient outlook, and passion for bringing people together.
While he is already deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace – joining eternity with those who preceded him and hopefully sitting in his favorite chair in his den, watching a western, or snacking on something sweet.
