IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Douglas J.
Mark
December 10, 1932 – July 9, 2025
DOUGLAS J. MARK, age 92. It is with great gratitude for his long life of 92 years, that we as his family share the news of the death of Douglas John Mark, at Vitalia Memory Care, North Olmsted, OH on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
Doug lived for the past 43 years with his family on a farm near Jeromesville, OH. He was born on December 10, 1932, in Uniontown, PA, one of five children of Frank and Anna Markusic. Doug was a U.S. Veteran, serving during the Korean War. He went to Case Western Reserve University on the GI Bill becoming a teacher and then principal of St. Edward Parish Elementary School in Ashland, OH for over 40 years.
Doug was also a farmer. He had a passionate interest in, and deep knowledge of, nature, trees, soil and all things agricultural. He loved raising cattle, especially Charolais, becoming very involved in their breeding; in his later years, that interest was transferred to his chickens! Doug was also an accomplished carpenter, spending many hours in his beloved barn, working on projects and making furniture, especially his many Adirondack chairs!
Doug had an insatiable curiosity about life and everything that was part of his world. He loved great philosophical conversations and was incredibly well read and thoughtful about how our lives could be heightened by such awarenesses. He had a fascinating vocabulary and an amazing memory for poetry, so that any story or recitation benefited from his retelling.
He was an eternal optimist and saw the beauty and hope in all of his grandchildren. He was amazed by their abilities and would recount with delight the little things they did that signaled possible achievements ahead. He was an inspiration to all those in his life.
He was predeceased by his wife Cathleen (by 1 year), aged 84. He will be deeply missed by his five children: John (Rosetta) of Boston, MA, Thomas (Julie) of Bath, OH, James (Wendy) of Olmsted Falls, OH, Matthew (Myra) of Copley, OH, and Sara (Jeff) of Mantua, OH. He had 13 grandchildren whom he adored: Connell, Chris (Ben), Alexa, Anna, Michael, Ryan, Megan, Ben, Lindsey, Ethan, Colin, Madison and Austin.
