EDWARD JACOB FASSBENDER, a resident of The Brookdale Westlake Village Retirement Community, died peacefully at home on November 19, 2021 on his 99th birthday surrounded by family.

Ed was born and raised in Marquette, Michigan.  He attended St. Peter's Catholic Grade School and served as an altar boy in the church.  He attended Baraga High School and graduated in 1940.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Construction Batallion (Seabees) in the Pacific during World War II.  After the war, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Joyce Galby.  They moved to Houghton, Michigan where Ed attended Michigan Tech University to get a degree in Civil Engineering.  After graduating in 1950, Ed began a long career in engineering with The Army Corps of Engineers.  In 1963, they moved with the family to Cleveland, Ohio where Ed took a job with NASA.  He retired from NASA in 1981 and enjoyed many years in retirement fishing, doing crossword puzzles, golfing, gardening and traveling with Betty.

Ed leaves behind three children:  Christine Papadeonise (John), Judith Petricevic (Mark) and Nancy Holmes (Michael); eight grandchildren:  Jeremy Gides Sr. (Robyn), Michael Gides (Kara), Jeffery Papadeonise (Samantha), Carol Petricevic, Steven Petricevic, Keith Holmes (Laura), Craig Holmes (Laura) and Carissa Gresko (Matt); fourteen great-grandchildren:  James Gides, Jeremy Gides Jr., Zachary Rush, Colby Gides, Mia Gides, Marissa Gides, Landon Holmes, Kennedy Holmes, Quinn Holmes, Cosette Holmes, Emersyn Holmes, Aaron Gresko, Cole Gresko and Sloane Gresko; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ed was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; his parents, Mary (nee Mahoney) and Herman Fassbender; as well as his sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Fassbender Stone, Lois Fassbender Burns and his brother, John "Jack" Fassbender.

Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, December 11, 2021, Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church (708 Erie St., Grafton, OH) at 12 Noon with visitation in the Gathering Area one hour prior to Mass.

Interment Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery (Seville, OH) Friday, March 18, 2022.
