ELEANOR (ELLIE) SUCHAN BATT
In loving memory of Ellie Batt, who at age ninety-two left this world and passed into the arms of our Savior on January 20, 2024. Ellie was born May 5, 1931 in Buffalo, New York, growing up with ten siblings in the highly-energetic Suchan family. She attended Nardin Academy and also two years at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY studying Music Education. On April 6, 1953, she married James L. Batt and together they raised ten children. She would be upset if they were not listed, so here's to you Mom: Jim, Carl, Rose, Joe, Caryll, Ellen, Pete, Bernadette, Anne Marie, and Paul. Ellie was preceded in death by her husband of seventy years, Jim; her parents Pauline (nee Poorten) and Charles Suchan; siblings Charles, Pauline, Bill, Dorothy, MaryAnn, Jeanne, Bob, Dick, Margie (Sr.Mary Lu), and Patricia; daughter Rose, and grandson Nick. Ellie leaves behind nine children, thirty-two grandchildren, and thirty-three great grandchildren.
One of the very first gifts Jim gave Ellie was a Singer sewing machine. That machine stretched many a thin dollar as Ellie sewed drapes, curtains, and much clothing over the years. She taught the girls to sew as well. Unlike most modern home appliances, that Singer sewing machine is still humming through the years!
Many summer vacations were spent in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. It was about an eight-hour drive from Buffalo and the drive itself created its own memories. Often using two cars winding up the switchback roads, those of us driving with Mom knew to recite Hail Mary's and sing lots of songs to keep her focused, awake, and alert. Those are moments more humorous as the years pass!
Ellie was a devout Catholic and shared her faith with her family. A crucifix adorned the wall next to Ellie's rocking chair where she sang many a baby to sleep. Prayers before meals and at bedtime were standard fare while each week the Batt family filled an entire pew during Sunday Mass. In her later years when nighttime sleep proved challenging, Ellie would rise from bed, make a cup of tea, light the candle by the Virgin Mary statue, and quietly pray.
Ellie loved music, reading, people, and her garden; but most of all her family. Her pride in life was being a Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. She will be greatly missed!
The joyful celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 11 am at St. Clarence Catholic Church, North Olmsted, Ohio. Memorial contributions are suggested to Covenant House New York, 460 W. 41st St., New York, NY 10036 or Kemper House, 10890 Prospect Rd., Strongsville, OH 44149.
