ERNESTINE R. McINTYRE (nee Roehrer) age 96. Died September 29 at her home with her loving family by her side. Beloved wife of 54 years of the late John T. "Jack"; mother of John A., Carl (deceased), Anne Demanelis (Ernie) and Sharon (William Mullen); devoted grandmother to Kathryn and Carolyn Demanelis; sister of the late Carl R. Roehrer of Birmingham, AL. Ernestine graduated from Garfield Hts. High School in 1935 at the height of the Great Depression. She was an outstanding student, winning awards in chemistry, and although finances hindered her pursuit of higher education, she always valued curiosity and learning, but college was not in her future. She immediately found a job and continued to work throughout her life. Before World War II, as a chemist she inspected ball bearings at Clevite Corp. She met her husband, Jack, while working at Clevite. Like many women of her generation, she worked for U.S. Steel throughout the war, earning recognition for her efforts from the War Production Board, and left there when the war was over to raise her family. When her children were older she returned to work at the Credit Bureau of Greater Cleveland. Family was everything to her. She was a great mom and grandma. Everyday was a new day with challenges to be met and experiences to be shared. She loved life and embraced her responsibilities with optimism and determination. "A job worth doing is worth doing well" was her motto. She excelled at baking and needlework, creating cookies and baby blankets to share with family and friends. She had a particular affection for children and animals, and in turn, they responded to her warmth. She particularly enjoyed watching her granddaughters learn to ride horses and visiting with Huxley, her beloved Labrador. She was happy she lived long enough to see her granddaughters graduate from college. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in her name to Valley Riding, Inc. in support of horseback riding programs for special needs children and adults, 19901 Puritas Ave., Cleveland, 44135. She will be greatly missed. Services were private.
