Garry Brigham Young, age 75, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024.Born in Van Wert, Ohio on February 25, 1948, Garry was the son of the late Floyd and Gladys Young.
Garry was a proud member of the U.S. Army – enlisting at 17 – and served in the Vietnam War. He was a Crew Chief in the Rebels Armed Helicopters Unit in the First Infantry Division (Big Red 1). During his service, Garry received numerous honors, including the U.S. Army Air Medal with V device, 9 oak leaf clusters, the U.S. Army Air Medal, 17 oak leaf clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was well respected by his fellow unit members and stayed in contact with many in the years following.
Garry is survived by his beloved wife, Dawn Young; daughters, Lisa Young and her fiancé, Dale Hanneman, Wesley Scherry, Kari Cash and Serena Young, sons, Brandon Ottelin and his wife, Courtney, and Steven Ottelin, and his wife Haley; grandchildren, Jaelen King and her husband, Jason, Rylen Asher, Braxten Asher, Kennedy Scherry, Reese Scherry, Colton Ottelin, Baker Ottelin, Emma Ottelin and Brooklyn Ottelin; great-grandchildren, Jayce King and Jacobi King; sisters, Lorraine Young, Janene Young Goins and her fiancé, Doug Parks, Cheryl Edwards, Deborah Lewis and her husband, Bryan, and the late Judith Young; and many nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
A heartfelt thank you to Donna Webb for her unwavering support of Garry, Dawn and the family leading up to and during his final days.
And the family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the compassionate staff members at the Hospice of Western Reserve.
A viewing and service to celebrate Garry's life will be held on Wednesday, January 24, beginning at 4 P.M. with service beginning at 6:30 P.M. in the Chambers Funeral Home of North Olmsted, 29150 Lorain Road at Stearns Road. Interment with military honors will be Thursday, January 25 at 12 P.M., Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert, Ohio.
