Captain Gordon Dyer Hall, 93, passed peacefully on December 23, 2024.

Gordon was born in Connecticut and attended Bates College in Maine, graduating with a degree in Economics in 1953.  He was involved in the athletic department as statistician for the baseball, football, and basketball teams.  Through his service in the Coast Guard, he moved to several places around the United States and Oshima, Japan. After graduating from Officer Candidate School, he served on a cutter in New London, Connecticut and later commanded a Coast Guard LORAN station in Japan.  Upon finishing his obligated service, he chased his dream of becoming a professional baseball umpire, but quickly discovered he couldn't make a living of it. Rejoining the Coast Guard, Gordon met and later married his wife, Linda, during his first assignment on the Great Lakes. He served in Washington, DC as the Chief of Enlisted Personnel and earned the Meritorious Service Medal.  He was transferred in 1978 to Cheboygan, Michigan, to captain the largest icebreaker permanently assigned to the Great Lakes, The USCGC Mackinaw WAGB-83 and was featured in Time Magazine during his tenure.  Upon his retirement in 1984, he earned his Master's degree at Baldwin Wallace College and began his work as the Vice President and Treasurer of the Lake Carriers Association in Cleveland, OH. He retired from that position in 1996.

Over the years, Gordon enjoyed spending time with his family, coaching several sports teams, forming a soccer league, and as director of the summer NOSO Soccer tournament in the 1980s.  He loved going to Major League Baseball games and was an ardent Baltimore Orioles fan before switching allegiance to the Cleveland Indians.  For over twenty years he volunteered at St. John's Hospital in Westlake and led the Diabetic Support Group..He and Linda were neighborhood staples for years, "front porch sitting" in their driveway, gathering neighbors and plying them with his latest favorite joke or story.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 61 years, Linda (Carl), four children, Kim, Brian (Susan), Kris (Tim) Fitz, and Todd (Rachel), grandchildren Lauren, Hunter, Grayson, Claudia, Hannah, Nolan, and Kelsey, his sister Joan Cnossen, numerous brother and sister-in-laws, many nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends discovered in his travels. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Marjorie (Adams) Hall.
