Joan Vingle grew up in Weston, Fairmont and Clarksburg, West Virginia, she graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1947. After graduation she moved to the Cleveland area to live with her aunt, Josephine Lakamy. Joan loved to dance and told many stories of her favorite pastime as a teenager going to dances and doing the jitterbug. She also loved to dance the Polka.

She attended cosmetology school in Cleveland but before she graduated met and married the love of her life James E. Scullen. They lived in Philadelphia for a short time while Jim was in the Navy but moved back to Cleveland in 1950 finally settling in Berea in 1954 where they raised their nine children. Joan was a "stay-at-home" mom for over thirty years. She worked many part-time jobs through those years at establishments such as J.C. Penny, McDonalds and her favorite C.S. John's Jewelers.

In the 1960's and 70's Joan was active in St. Mary's Church and school where she served with the Athletic Boosters helping to raise funds so the students could enjoy extracurricular sports. Many Sunday afternoons were spent at the basketball courts of the Catholic schools in the area. Joan always served faithfully and loved God with all her heart.

In the late 1960's Joan helped found a group called "Berea Mother's" this group collected items and baked homemade cookies once a month they would gather to prepare to send the packages to the soldiers from Berea that were serving in Viet Nam. Even after her own son Thomas J. Scullen was KIA (March 2, 1968) Joan would help the other women.

Upon Jim's retirement the couple moved to Leesburg Florida where they met many friends and enjoyed the Florida sunshine. Joan learned many new hobbies like Square Dancing, playing Darts and Mahjong, and making ceramics. They also enjoyed many, many card games with their friends.

As their health began to deteriorate, they made the hard decision to move back up to Berea to be closer to family. Joan lost her husband Jim in 2012 and since that time has fought Alzheimer's disease. She did not give up easily but has had her loving family with her throughout.

Joan will be missed by those that are left here but we celebrate with the knowledge that she is now in the arms of her heavenly Father and those that have preceded her, especially her husband Jim (of 64 years), two sons Tom and Jim, and daughter-in-law Lynette.
