Faith. Family. Friends. Jack McNally was a man rooted by strong faith, a large Irish Catholic family, and always kept good company. Jack McNally was the son of Irish immigrants, Anne M. (nee Burke) and John J. McNally, Sr. His parents instilled in Jack, and his siblings, Tom, and the late Mickey and Dick, the values of faith and hard work.
Jack shared his love of Ireland and the importance of “Keeping the Faith” with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his many friends. He took great pride in his Irish ancestry and often could be found singing an Irish tune, or the loudest voice in the “choir” at mass. Jack proudly marched in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade as a Guarantor for over 60 years, with his many good friends, especially Judge William Coyne, at his side.
Jack grew up on the east side of Cleveland where he attended St. Thomas Aquinas grade school and was a proud graduate of Benedictine High School. After attending John Carroll University for two years, he joined the trades to help support his family after the passing of his father, and worked as a pipefitter for 40 years, laboring for those he loved. Jack was a proud and active member of Pipefitters Local Union 120 from the time he entered his apprenticeship until the time of his passing. If you knew Jack, you knew he was a Union Man through and through.
After retiring from the Pipefitters at the age of 60, Jack began his second career in the file room at the Cuyahoga County Probate Court. Jack worked proudly for 20+ years for Judges John E. Corrigan, John J. Donnelly and John Russo. Jack enjoyed his time at the County and especially his colleagues. They’d often comment, “For a new guy, you sure know a lot of people!” To which Jack commented, “I grew up and went to school with most of these judges and attorneys.”
Friend, confidante, and mentor were some of the words used by his dear friends and coworkers to describe him. At the ripe age of 82, Jack decided to finally retire.
The late Sheila McDonald was the love of Jack’s life. Over a beautiful 59 years of marriage, they raised 5 children, Sean, Michael, Maureen, Timothy, and Mary Beth. Together they endured life’s joys and hardships, with grace, love, and a strong foundation of faith. Creating our McNally Clan - 16 grandchildren, and 7 (soon to be 8) great-grandchildren. How blessed are we to have had our dad, “Popper” and Grandpa all these years, and carry on his legacy.
Along with Jack’s deep faith and his love for his family and friends was his love of sports and any activity his children or grandchildren were involved in. “Popper” never missed a game, concert, play, award ceremony, or graduation. If there was an opportunity to support his children or grandchildren, he always found a way to be there.
He was a legend in the bleachers, always sitting in the first row bench seat to have optimal viewing of the action and to keep the score with his X’s and tallies. Often shouting out “aim for the square! Time for a little bingo!” Jack was never afraid to speak up and “help out” the referees. Whether it be a CYO game for St. Bernadette or St. Christopher, a match at St. Ignatius High School, Magnificat, or Saint Joseph Academy, Culver, Western Reserve, Avon Lake, Westlake, or Rocky River High School, he drove all around town to cheer on his family. You name it - Jack was present.
The family of Jack McNally would like to extend their gratitude to Patrice Campbell and the entire staff at Ennis Court for creating a home, not only for Jack, but for our family the past three years. Countless memories were shared at birthday parties, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, visits after Saturday mass, and Men’s Night on Thursday. We are grateful for all the friends who stopped in, said hello, and shared a laugh or a story.
Jack McNally was beloved by many. We are all blessed to have been touched by his love and humor, and know we have another guardian angel watching over all of us.
In the wise words of Jack McNally, “Keep the Faith”.
