THE REV. JOHN E. MANNING, JR. age 79. Loving son of the late Dolores (nee Burkhart) and John E. Manning, Sr.; dear brother of Katherine McGinty (Patrick); uncle of Owen (Waluka) and the late Cecelia.

Fr. Manning was educated at Ascension Elementary, Cleveland, Borromeo Seminary College, Wickliffe, St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 27 May 1972 in St. Columbkille Church, Parma, Ohio, Bishop Clarence G. Issenmann ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland. Father Manning's first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of St. Louis, Cleveland Hts. On 27 June 1974 he joined the faculty of Borromeo Seminary, Wickliffe. During this assignment he served as Associate Judge of the Tribunal effective 21 September 1983 and Prosynodal Judge of the Tribunal effective 1 November 1983. On 14 June 1989, Fr. Manning was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Bartholomew, Middleburg Hts. He was transferred on 21 June 1994 to serve St. Vincent de Paul, Cleveland as Pastor. During this assignment he served as a Pastor Consultor (2003-2008), he was a Member of the College of Consultors effective 1 October 2005. He also served as a Presbyteral Convener for the Cleveland Northwest District (2006-2009). On 1 June 2015 Fr. Manning was appointed Delegate for Senior Priests and served on Faculty at St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. During this assignment Fr. Manning served as Administrator of the following parishes: Our Lady of Peace, Cleveland and St. Adalbert, Cleveland (February 2017 -June 2017); St. Patrick, Bridge Avenue (July 2017-March 2018); St. Mark, Cleveland (September 2018-December 2018); and Holy Trinity, Avon (May-August 2021). Fr. Manning retired on 1 July 2021. After retirement he served as a Senior Priest-Retired member of the Presbyteral Council, effective 1 June 2023. Fr. Manning was a great teacher and was able to bring history alive with his colorful stories particularly of the local Church of Cleveland. He would always talk about the great characters of the past and remind us that there were many characters still in the making! His wonderful smile, great laugh and joyful presence will be greatly missed.

Passed away August 27, 2025. Funeral Mass Thursday, St. Ladislas Church (2345 Bassett Rd. Westlake) at 11 A.M., Most Rev. Martin Amos, Principal Celebrant.  Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.  Vespers Wednesday, September 3, at 3 P.M., Most Rev. Michael G. Woost presiding, at St. Ladislas Church with visitation following until 6 P.M.
