June Champlin Ackerman was taken by the Lord at age 95. She is survived by her loving son Bruce, her loving daughter Connie Omelsky (Paul), her loving grandchildren Marc (Marina), Stephen and Matthew, as well as by great-grandchildren Eve and Elijah. Also surviving are loving cousins Janet and Bill (Tho) Ackerman. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings.
June was the oldest of 10 children born to a coal-mining family in rural Noble County, Ohio. She worked hard, assisting her mother in the raising of her siblings and caring for her Grandma Champlin during her last year of life, while June was still in high school. After graduating from Belle Valley High School, where she excelled academically, June moved to Cleveland in 1938 and lived initially with a physician and his wife to help care for their two young children, while also attending Beauty School in the evenings. She then worked as a Beauty Operator in Lakewood until the War broke out, when she switched to a job at National Carbon, where she worked long hours on an assembly line making airplane parts for the War effort. June met and married Chuck Ackerman, a professional photographer, during World War II. During Chuck's overseas military service, June lived with his mother, Lillian, and they formed a very close bond. They had two children, and once they were grown June returned to work as a telephone switchboard operator for the Van Dorn Company. Chuck died in 1973. Over the years June had a very special gift for making and keeping friends, and she treasured them all.
A Memorial gathering will be held to celebrate June's life, date and place to be determined. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a contribution be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110.
