LOIS CLARK HOLLY VAN AUKEN of North Olmsted died peacefully at home on Monday, Nov. 21. She was 98. As a young child, Lois lived in Japan and with her parents survived the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Her husband, Robert A. Van Auken, was superintendent of North Olmsted Schools from 1965 to 1978. Lois was born in Schenectady, NY, in 1918. She graduated with degrees in English, history, and geology from the University of Rochester in 1940 and worked as young adult program director at the YWCA in Elmira, NY, during World War II. She and Robert were married in 1946 and moved to Columbus, OH. While he attended Ohio State University, she served as office secretary to the local League of Women Voters (LWV), and this affiliation continued for 70 years. Robert's career in school administration took them to Albany, NY, then Warren, Findlay, and North Olmsted, OH. Lois remained active in the League as they raised their four children. She joined the Westlake-North Olmsted and Cuyahoga County LWV chapters in 1965. For scores of elections, she compiled candidates' information for the League's voters' guides and registered voters at North Olmsted's annual Homecoming and other places. The LWV of Ohio recognized Lois with its Distinguished Leadership Award in 2003. Lois loved flowers, reading, and music. She played piano for residents at local nursing homes and took fossils and photos to elementary schools to help children learn about North Olmsted's history. She served on the Landmarks Commission for the city of North Olmsted and was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church. Lois cared for Robert for 30 years after he lost the ability to walk because of a neurologic condition. Their home was always the family's gathering place for birthdays, cookouts, and holidays.
