MADELINE M. CUBIC

MADELINE MARY CUBIC (nee Staron) was born in Youngstown on August 16, 1922, the oldest of 3 children of John and Mary (nee Janesko) Staron. Her siblings were Sister M. Germaine (deceased) of the Ursuline Nuns and Raymond Staron (deceased). She grew up in the 1930's, went to Woodrow Wilson high school, and attended St. Matthias church. She became a talented pianist and played into her 90’s. She worked as a secretary during WWII, then married George Cubic in 1946 and they settled in Cleveland. She always wanted a large family and had 8 children - 6 girls followed by 2 boys. Madeline worked hard alongside George and enjoyed her role as a mother. She was a devoted stay-at-home mom and did not drive a car until her late 30's. She had a high energy level and faithfully performed the necessary tasks for her big family. Weekly church attendance by the family was mandatory and by this we were given a spiritual foundation. Afterwards a delicious home made Sunday dinner was prepared and daily family dinners were the norm. She sacrificed so that her children could receive music, dance, or golf lessons. She taught her daughters to sew. She valued Catholic education and sent all of us to Catholic schools. As her children grew up she collected TV research data via phone calls for Neilson Co., then took a retail job at Sears which she enjoyed and had for 12 years. Madeline also volunteered her time and talent to the NAMI organization and her churches. She valued education and helped us in attaining our college educations. She had a strong personality and taught her children the values of honesty, integrity, and hard work. When her father died she took her mother into her home for about 10 years. She was a dedicated letter-writer to family and friends, also sending birthday and Christmas cards, for most of her life. Her correspondence was highly valued by family and friends over the years. The annual Christmas Eve party with Christmas carols and food became a family tradition for 30+ years and is fondly remembered by 3 generations. She hosted graduation parties, wedding showers, and holiday celebrations in her home with hands of love. Happy folks eagerly enjoyed her nut, apricot, and poppyseed rolls (for which she is famous), cheesecake, and innumerable cookies, cakes, and pies. Her memory is blessed and she will be greatly missed.

Madeline is predeceased by her husband of 77 years, George, and two of her children: Ellen Cubic and Janet (Joseph, deceased) Sima. Those left to cherish her memory are: Marcia (David) Jurcsisn, Mary Beth (Thomas) Basalla, Jean (Stanley) Koplan, Marilyn (Brian) Emsley, James Cubic, and John (Donna) Cubic. Madeline leaves 17 grandchildren: Laura (Tom) Chonko, James (Jennifer) Sima, Suzanne (Greg) Auer, Christine Jurcsisn (Randy Raber), Anna (Jacob) Stamper, David Jurcsisn (Stephanie Kurivial), Theodore Jurcsisn, Jennifer Jurcsisn (Charley Skira), Timothy Jurcsisn, Leslie (Brian) Basalla-McCafferty, Gregory (Christina) Basalla, Nathan (Miriam) Basalla, Lisa Koplan, Steven Koplan, Laura Emsley (Michael) Stephens, Lynda Westgate, Michael (Gabrielle) Westgate. She also leaves 11 great-grandchildren: Allyson, Alex, and Ashton Montgomery; Evelyn and Nora Westgate; Alyssa and Ryan Chonko; Kyle and Ellie Sima; Bradyn Raber; Savannah Stamper.

Passed away August 2, 2026. Funeral Mass Monday, August 10, The Church of St. Clarence (30106 Lorain Rd., North Olmsted) at 11:00 A.M where friends mall call from 10 AM until time of Mass in the Gathering Room. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
