MARTIN “MARTY” FRANCIS EGAN of Olmsted Township, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 88 on May 14, 2026, while surrounded by his family.
Marty was born on April 19, 1938, to the late Martin and Margaret (Young) Egan in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the youngest of eight siblings and had a vibrant and happy childhood, spending his summers at the family cottage in Geneva-on-the-Lake and always playing with friends and cousins. Marty attended St. Vincent de Paul School and was a proud graduate of St. Edward High School, Class of 1957. Shortly after graduating, Marty entered the Army. His service provided him with many fond memories, lifelong friends, and worldly travels.
In 1963, Marty was reluctantly dragged to a singles’ dance by a friend. It was there he met a young woman, Laura Soukup, with whom he would happily share the rest of his life. Married a year later, Marty and Laura enjoyed settling in Olmsted Township and raising their two children in the tight-knit community. They loved traveling together, dancing the polka, entertaining family and friends at their cottage, and making each other laugh.
Marty had a long career as a journeyman plumber and was a member of Plumbers Union Local 55. He appreciated working with his hands, being “Mr. Fixit,” and being a union member. He was immensely proud of his son and two grandsons, who followed in his footsteps by becoming plumbers themselves.
Marty was deeply involved in the community where he spent his whole life and funneled much of his service through Kiwanis for over 55 years, serving as president, assisting at the annual Pancake Breakfast, leading children through programs such as K-Kids, Builders Club, and Key Club, and volunteering at the Bulldog Relay Races.
He enjoyed going to Olmsted Falls football games and watching the marching band play. He was a parishioner of Saint Mary of the Falls for 60 years and maintained a deep Catholic faith throughout his life. He was known for his Irish heritage and sweet tooth—he believed no meal was complete without dessert.
Marty’s greatest joy was being Dad, Gramps, and Great-Grandpa. He was the idyllic father figure. He was a constant presence in the lives of his children and grandchildren and loved supporting and encouraging them in any way he could. He attended all the sporting events. He taught them how to fish, how to swim, how to build snowmen, and how to tie proper knots. He taught them to pray. He shared his love of trains and big band music. He told them countless stories about his life and family history. As he saw modeled in Christ, he poured out his heart in total love for the family he built. He knew that every moment is a gift, so family time was never wasted.
In addition to his parents, Marty was predeceased by his siblings Gilbert, Harold, Edward “Eddie” (Margaret), James “Jimmy” (Patricia), and Henrietta “Rita” Egan, as well as Mary “Mae” (John) Burkart and Margaret (Raymond) Raffay.
Left to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy are his wife of 62 years, Laura (née Soukup); his children, Marian (Thomas) Stephens and Joseph (Heidi) Egan; his grandchildren, Jacob (Emily), Joseph “Joey” Jr. (Caitlyn), Samantha Egan, Kathleen “Katy” (John) Butler, and Jonathon (Mae) Kopp; step-grandchildren Ashley and Jacob Ryuf and Katherine “Kaeli” and Audra Stephens; as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet for his Funeral Mass Wednesday, May 20, Saint Mary of the Falls Church (25615 Bagley Rd., Olmsted Falls) at 10:30 A.M. followed by burial at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Olmsted Falls, Ohio.
