Neil M. Conway was raised in Lakewood, Ohio, and was known for his loyalty, quiet reliability, devotion to family, generosity, and his dry, understated sense of humor. A proud graduate of St. Edward High School's Class of 1965, Neil lived a life marked by steadfast care for those around him and a consistent, dependable presence in every role he held.
At nineteen, he was drafted into the United States Army and served honorably in Vietnam as a medic—a role that reflected his courage, compassion, and quiet strength.
After returning home, Neil earned his bachelor's degree from John Carroll University and went on to receive his Doctorate in Biochemistry from Cleveland State University. He began his professional life running the lab at Fairview Hospital, where he was revered by co-workers as a kind, fair, and competent leader. Known for his humor and good nature, Neil was well-loved by colleagues. In a career marked by reliability, we can't remember him ever missing a day of work. He later continued at MetroHealth's McCafferty Health Center and Mt. Sinai Hospital, while also teaching Medical Technology courses and serving as a professor at Cleveland State University.
It was at Fairview Hospital that Neil met a spirited young woman from the nursery, Theresa, who affectionately called him "lab boy." They shared more than fifty years of marriage, marked by unconditional love for their family and a natural instinct to help anyone in need.
Neil coached Little League baseball and attended as many of his children's and grandchildren's extracurricular events as he could. A lifelong Cleveland sports fan, he cheered on every team through seasons that tested patience as much as loyalty, and he also enjoyed quiet Sunday afternoons watching golf with Theresa.
Known for his dry wit, playful smirks, fist bumps, and jokes, Neil's humor and steady presence will be deeply missed by his family, including his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a long list of pets from his Conway clan.
Neil was the ultimate provider—he always made sure his family had everything he could give, and he took great pride in doing so. The world was better for his presence, and those who knew him will carry his spirit forward with gratitude and love.
