Newell D. Sanders, age 96, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2011. Survived by his wife of 56 years, Thelma, his niece Elizabeth Bouck and nephew Jack Sanders-Reed and their 3 children. Preceded in death by his beloved twin brother John Claytor Sanders. Newell worked for 36 years for NACA and NASA, retiring in 1972. Accomplishments included, Head of Physics Division/NACA, part of the team which organized NASA, Assistant Director of Advanced Technology leading development of the first communication and weather satellites, led the "quiet engine" program. Newell received a NASA "Exceptional Service" award, was a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Received the Kent Hale Smith award for his volunteer work at Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
