ROBERT LEE BOWEN, born April 17, 1927 in Morgantown, West Virginia to James Henry Bowen and Polly Ettie Wegman Bowen, took his last breath peacefully in Bay Village, Ohio, with his granddaughter by his side on June 6, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Gary Lee Bowen, his grandson John Cristopher Bowen and siblings, Georgie, Junior, Rosie (Rose), Stella (Ted), Bessie, Viola (Toots), Clinton, Ada (Jean), Mertie (Opal), Olive, and Madeline, as well as, his wife Wanda Jean Bowen (Newman). In loving memory of Handyman, former CB Club member and beloved husband of Starlight.
Robert and Jean were married in Baltimore, Maryland in April of 1945 while he was working as a Slicing and Wrapping Machine Operator at American Stores Bakery just months before his draft into the military. As a Marine Corps Veteran, who served during World Word II, he was meticulous and took pride in his work. Eventually, he made his way to Cleveland, Ohio accepting a job at LTV Steel as a Crane Operator, where he enjoyed the view, but most importantly the air conditioning. He retired in 1989 at the age of 62 and looked back fondly of his memories as he pleasantly savored his freedom of retirement for over 35 years.
Pape, as he was known affectionately by his grandchildren, Bob to many friends, and Bob Robert to his siblings, was recognized as the man who could fix anything and brighten any room with his infectious smile. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories that will forever be treasured by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A devoted husband to Jean, his partner in life and love for over 62 years until her death on March 14, 2007. Together, they shared a passion for bowling, spending evenings at the lanes, enjoying each other's company and spending time with their family.
As a sports enthusiast, Bob found great joy in watching baseball and football, particularly rooting for his beloved Cleveland Guardians or Cleveland Browns. His passion for the game was contagious, and he could often be found cheering for his team from the comfort of his favorite armchair.
In his leisure time, Bob enjoyed testing his luck at the casino, where he could be found playing the slots with a gleeful smile on his face, sitting quietly at his desk playing video games like Medal of Honor, or listening to one of his favorite country music stations waiting to hear Alan Jackson, Doris Day or Conway Twitty. He also had a knack for tinkering in his garage, always working on the latest project or setting up the newest and best sound system or movie theater for his family and friends to enjoy. Later in life, he cherished his cat naps curled up in his favorite sweater.
Bob had a passion for cars, each one holding a special place in his heart as he fondly recalled the memories associated with them. He had a talent for capturing life's precious moments behind the camera, preserving memories for generations to come.
Pape was known for his legendary goodie bags, which he lovingly prepared for his grandchildren as they departed their stay bringing joy to all who received them. He had a mischievous side, often playing practical jokes and enjoying lively games of Canasta at the kitchen table with those he held dear.
Above all, Bob was a beloved neighbor, friend, and family member who touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, generosity, and zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers please consider donations to https://gofund.me/5d4f5893 to support his grandson's continued medical treatment.
